What Your Solicitor Helps to Protect Against
Succession tax planning has the most value before assets pass — when reliefs can still be claimed and structures can still be put in place.
Missed Reliefs
Losing Business Relief or Agricultural Relief because qualifying conditions were not identified or maintained.
Unplanned CAT Exposure
Your family facing an unnecessary Capital Acquisitions Tax bill because thresholds and exemptions were not used.
Misaligned Will & Plan
A Will that does not reflect the succession plan you actually intend.
Poorly Timed Gifts
Lifetime gifts made without using the Small Gifts Exemption or understanding the tax consequences.
Unstructured Business Succession
Passing a family business without a plan that protects both the business and the relevant reliefs.
Fragmented Advice
Legal and tax advice from different advisers that leave gaps between the two.
Everything above is included in your fixed fee — agreed before any work begins, with no hidden costs and no billing surprises.

Meet Your Solicitor
Tamoor Barlas
Solicitor
I am a solicitor based in Dublin 15. Alongside my commercial practice, I advise individuals, families and businesses on Irish immigration pathways — from employment permits and residency through to family reunification and citizenship.
Relocation is more than a visa application. The people I advise are often making one of the most significant legal and financial decisions of their lives. I combine immigration counsel with tax and corporate insight so your move to Ireland is planned as a whole, not in isolated filings.
Because I practise as both a solicitor and a tax, I can advise on immigration status and the tax consequences of becoming Irish-resident in one engagement — reducing duplication and closing the gap between legal permission and financial planning.
“My job is to take the immigration and tax complexity off your hands — so you can focus on building your life in Ireland.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) charges 33% on the value of an inheritance above the relevant threshold. For children inheriting from a parent, the Group A threshold is currently €400,000 — children can receive up to this amount combined over their lifetime before CAT applies, with amounts above it taxed at 33%. Business Relief and Agricultural Relief can reduce or eliminate CAT on qualifying assets.
Business Property Relief reduces the taxable value of qualifying business assets by 90% for CAT purposes — effectively making them almost CAT-free. To qualify, the business must be trading rather than an investment, the donor must have owned the asset for a minimum period, and the recipient must retain it for six years after the gift or inheritance. The conditions are specific and require careful review.
Agricultural Relief reduces the taxable value of qualifying agricultural property by 90% for CAT purposes. To qualify, the property must be agricultural — land, buildings, livestock or farm machinery — and the recipient must be a 'farmer', meaning at least 80% of their assets after the gift or inheritance must be agricultural property. The recipient must also farm the land, or lease it to a qualifying farmer, for six years.
Yes. Lifetime gifts reduce the size of your estate and can benefit from the Small Gifts Exemption, currently €3,000 per recipient per year, which is exempt from CAT and does not count towards the lifetime threshold. Larger gifts use up the recipient's tax-free threshold, potentially resulting in CAT now or on death. Timing and structure matter significantly.
It allows you to give up to €3,000 per recipient per year without any CAT consequences. This exemption is separate from the lifetime Group A/B/C thresholds and does not reduce them. Used regularly over time, it can transfer significant wealth without CAT cost — a couple can give €6,000 a year per child without CAT.
Trusts hold assets for the benefit of family members, can protect assets from dissipation, and can achieve tax efficiencies in some circumstances. Common uses include trusts for minor children, discretionary trusts for family members unable to manage their own affairs, and trusts as part of a broader succession plan. Trust planning in Ireland requires careful consideration of the tax rules, as discretionary trusts are subject to specific CAT charges.
