What Your Solicitor Helps to Protect Against

Without a Will — or with one that is out of date — your estate is distributed by fixed legal rules, not by your wishes.

01

Intestacy Rules Apply

Dying without a Will means your estate passes under the Succession Act 1965 — not according to your wishes.

02

Unmarried Partners Excluded

An unmarried partner has no automatic right to inherit, regardless of the length of the relationship.

03

No Guardians Appointed

Without a Will, the court — not you — decides who becomes guardian of your children.

04

Outdated Wills

A Will that has not been updated after marriage, children, divorce or a house move may no longer reflect your wishes, or may be automatically revoked.

05

Missed Tax Planning

An estate structured without reliefs such as Agricultural Relief, Business Relief or the Dwelling House Exemption pays more tax than necessary.

06

No Enduring Power of Attorney

Without one in place, a Circuit Court application is required if you lose capacity — a slower, more expensive and more distressing process for your family.

Everything above is included in your fixed fee — agreed before any work begins, with no hidden costs and no billing surprises.

Tamoor Barlas

Solicitor

I am a solicitor based in Dublin 15. Alongside my commercial practice, I advise individuals, families and businesses on Irish immigration pathways — from employment permits and residency through to family reunification and citizenship.

Relocation is more than a visa application. The people I advise are often making one of the most significant legal and financial decisions of their lives. I combine immigration counsel with tax and corporate insight so your move to Ireland is planned as a whole, not in isolated filings.

Because I practise as both a solicitor and a tax, I can advise on immigration status and the tax consequences of becoming Irish-resident in one engagement — reducing duplication and closing the gap between legal permission and financial planning.

“My job is to take the immigration and tax complexity off your hands — so you can focus on building your life in Ireland.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Without a Will, Irish intestacy rules apply — a fixed formula that disregards your personal wishes. An unmarried partner receives nothing, guardians cannot be nominated, and no tax planning protections are in place. Making a Will protects your wishes legally.

The Succession Act 1965 applies. Generally, if you are married with children, your spouse receives one-third and your children share two-thirds. Unmarried partners receive nothing, regardless of the length of the relationship, as they have no automatic inheritance rights in Ireland.

Review your Will every three to five years and immediately after major life events — marriage, the birth of a child, the death of a beneficiary or executor, a significant asset acquisition, business changes, separation or divorce, or a move to or from Ireland. Marriage automatically revokes an existing Irish Will.

Yes, with limitations. A spouse has a legal right share — a minimum of one-third, or one-half without children — that cannot be defeated by a Will. Children have no automatic right to inherit, but can bring a claim if they believe inadequate provision has been made. Careful structuring minimises the risk of a successful claim.

An Enduring Power of Attorney allows you to appoint a trusted person to make decisions about your property and financial affairs, and in some cases your personal welfare, if you lose mental capacity in the future. Without one, a Circuit Court application for a decision-making representative becomes necessary — a slower, more expensive and more distressing process.

Yes. Available reliefs include Agricultural Relief, Business Relief, the Dwelling House Exemption and the annual Small Gifts Exemption. Lifetime gifting also reduces the taxable value of your estate. The most effective tax planning is built into a broader estate plan rather than left until the last minute.
